That means indie rock band Red Wanting Blue is rare indeed. A quarter-century of steady artistic growth is virtually unheard of in the volatile world of rock music\, whether it’s an underground band struggling to find the key to success or a multi-million-selling supergroup buckling from the excesses of fame. \nRed Wanting Blue\, formed in 1996 in Athens\, Ohio\, is comprised of Scott Terry on lead vocals\, tenor guitar\, and ukulele; Mark McCullough on bass\, chapman stick\, and vocals; Greg Rahm on guitar\, keyboards\, and vocals; Eric Hall on guitar\, lap steel\, and vocals; and Dean Anshutz on drums and percussion. Together the five musicians have forged a creative path that grows and expands with each successive recording. \nBy gradually morphing from self-sufficient\, independent outfit to skirting the mainstream without losing underground cred\, Red Wanting Blue earned the right to enjoy the benefits of longevity. The band’s music followed suit. Take melodic heartland rock ‘n’ roll sprinkled with dashes of down-home Americana and dip it in the modern\, metropolitan rock world. Then add muscle\, from a robust rhythm section to the full-throttle vocals of frontman Scott Terry. The results are truly a music industry story worth telling. \nRed Wanting Blue is:\nScott Terry (Vocals\, Tenor Guitar\, Ukulele)\nMark McCullough (Bass\, Chapman Stick\, Vocals)\nGreg Rahm (Guitar\, Keyboards\, Vocals)\nEric Hall (Guitar\, Lap Steel\, Vocals)\nDean Anshutz (Drums & Percussion) \n*** \nDoors at 7\nShow at 8 \n$32 Advance\n$35 Day Of\n$75 VIP Soundcheck Sit-In Upgrade Package available through Red Wanting Blue directly. The HawtThorns are reimagining their universe in their latest recording adventures. The sun-kissed songwriting\, deft guitar work\, and lush vocal harmonies that have been at the core of their sound are exponentially magnified through the lens of their upcoming record\, Zero Gravity. This 3rd album from the Nashville-based duo includes 11 songs recorded at The Studio Nashville owned by The Wood Brothers and was performed by some of Nashville’s most accomplished musicians. \nZero Gravity is a sonic trip into deeply felt personal experiences\, abstract storytelling\, and adventurous\, genre-bending productions. The HawtThorns love for guitars is apparent on this record\, as the layers of variously toned and textured electric and acoustic instruments are as much a part of the songwriting as are the lyrics. The interplay between far-out keyboard tracks and Johnny Hawthorn’s syncopated guitar hooks and riffs deliberately creates a unique appeal for each of the tracks. The music beds enhance KP’s fearless\, wistfully honeyed lead vocals – recorded live\, with the band directly to 2-inch tape. \nMusical director and bass player Ted Pecchio (Doyle Bramhall II\, Oliver Wood) assembled the band for the sessions\, which included Jano Rix (Wood Brothers) on all keys and Nick Buda (Kenny Chesney) on drums. Lastly\, singer-songwriter Alice Wallace also contributed harmonies on The Everly Brothers song\, “When Will I Be Loved”. \nThe title track\, “Zero Gravity”\, embodies the venturesome spirit of the record. A “power ballad”\, the song begins with a stripped-down production that includes spacey keyboard sounds and acoustic guitar with a demure\, wispy vocal. It continues to build in intensity and volume\, with the peak being the guitar solo\, akin to a Ziggy Stardust-era Mick Ronson performance. The entire song is played over a salsa clave beat that never quits\, while lyrically\, it is a story of coming to terms with losing a soul mate. \n“Nothing But A Shadow” and “Hands On A Clock” nod to Americana and Alt-country in format but have a pop flair and convivial daringness throughout. Other tracks\, “Trouble” and “Faking It”\, lean into indie-pop and convey an amount of sarcasm in theme while still possessing the chime and sparkle expected in a HawtThorns production. Overall\, the band has offered an eclectic group of tunes on Zero Gravity that stylistically span the musical solar system. With new recordings come inspired live performances and fresh\, brave style. The HawtThorns are exploring every aspect of expression with the new release\, out in April 2024 via Red Parlor Records. \nKP and Johnny Hawthorn\, have had celebrated careers that started in LA’s singer-songwriter and Alt-Country scenes. Between the two\, they have hundreds of recordings heard on network and cable TV\, and film. KP co-founded LA’s CALICO the band while Johnny fronted his own band and played in legacy acts\, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Everclear. Their common ground has been the starting point for a sum greater than it’s parts\, an inspired combination of songwriting\, vocals and guitar work. \nThere has been no shortage of praise. PopMatters declared\, “Dynamite duo who aim to pull up their roots\, stick by their guns and bring back the sounds of the Laurel Canyon in the 1960’s\, the British invaders of the ’70’s and the cosmic cowboys still twirling through time and space” The Alternate Root stated “a perfect blend of melody and magic\, one that incorporates the sunny sounds of classic California Rock blended with the rich resonant sounds of today’s Americana musical environs” and Americana Highways effused “The HawtThorns make songwriting look easy.” \nAn interstellar superhighway through the constellations of Americana\, Alt-Country\, and Rock ‘n Roll will leave The HawtThorns floating in Zero Gravity this Spring.\n \n Get Your Tickets URL:https://westsidebowl.com/event/the-hawtthorns/ CATEGORIES:Country,Live Music ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://westsidebowl.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/436007672_946009507525644_3237665404739132271_n.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20240505T080000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20240505T170000 DTSTAMP:20240424T172903Z CREATED:20240424T171918Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240424T172903Z UID:10004158-1714896000-1714928400@westsidebowl.com SUMMARY:The Giraffes DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, May 5 to watch The Giraffes\, Orca Station\, Assemble\, and Sump Pump Sluts! \nThe Giraffes are a cult band from Brooklyn that has been leveling crowds with their signature mixture of heavy rock\, punk\, metal and surf since 1996. A well-earned reputation for mayhem has followed the band from the start. Their guitarist was shot in the leg outside of a White Castle late one night in Brooklyn after being accosted by an off-duty fire marshal with an itchy trigger finger. The bullet is still lodged in his knee. Their singer has suffered multiple Sudden Cardiac Death events. He has a defibrillator implanted in his chest which has erroneously shocked him on stage. During a show at Chicago’s legendary Double Door\, it sent 700 volts directly into his heart 3 times in 30 seconds. He finished the set. \nThey have toured with Local-H\, Eagles of Death Metal\, The Vacation and Skeleton Key\, sharing the stage with Interpol\, Fishbone\, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s\, the Strokes. They have played Amsterjam\, Voodoofest\, Monolith\, SXSW\, Bonnaroo\, CMJ\, Northside and more. Nick has been performing cover gigs for about 10 years. During those shows\, he would sneak in a few of his own songs\, and they were always met with positive feedback and sometimes even tears. Comparisons to Jack White\, Tom Petty\, and Brittany Howard aside\, the veteran songwriter has been a long time critical favorite. Hip-hop icon Ice-T appeared in his recent music video for ‘Can You Take It?’ which was nominated for a California Music Video Award. Picked to take part in the 2021 Durango Songwriters Showcase for Film & TV\, his songs have been heard on networks such as the CW\, HBO\, and MTV\, as well as in commercials for Pinterest\, Adobe\, and American Express. Time Out NY says ‘Hoy’s music is fueled by straight up melodicism.’ Red Red Wine on a Sunday says ‘Greg’s records are deep – like peeling layers off an onion – each song is a revelation!’ Broken 8 says his work ‘shines with a focused punk rock swagger.’ \nThe new LP by eclectic and versatile rocker Greg Hoy\, “Yay For Effort”\, is now available on Bandcamp\, Spotify and all the major services with a planned first single / video “Comfort Vendetta” coming to YouTube Friday. \nListen to “Yay For Effort” on Spotify. \nPiano and acoustic themes abound under lyrical reflections about the rapid-fire loss of several close people in his life: his father\, a college bandmate\, and his career mentor. Quieter\, piano pop motifs are supplemented by the occasional drum loop\, 80’s sample\, or a familiar distorted melodic guitar of past work – yet still reflective of the energy of his live shows. Make no mistake: there’s still plenty of both power and pop\, even as it’s delivered in a more quiet\, introspective way. \nThe closing of San Francisco’s famed indie Tiny Telephone studio – where Hoy first recorded after moving west over a decade ago – allowed his purchase of the studio’s coveted 1970’s Eventide Harmonizer effects unit used on albums by John Vanderslice\, Spoon\, Sleater-Kinney\, John Doe\, and countless others. This helped shape an album as varied as the FM-radio comfort food music of his youth which he revisited often over the past years including Eno-era David Bowie\, Joni Mitchell\, T-Rex\, Elvis Costello\, and early solo Peter Gabriel. \nGreg meticulously wrote\, played\, recorded\, mixed\, and mastered the 10 song LP by himself holed up in his California mountain house. The result is all the more impressive considering it was recorded in sessions between floods\, fires\, pandemics\, and while becoming a parent for the first time. The album is also the first to be released under Hoy’s new publishing company Earhopper Songs. \n$10 in advance\nDoors at 7\nShow at 8 \nSpecial Guests: BEAMS!
