OUR IMPACT
Welcome to Westside Bowl in Youngstown
INDEPENDENT VENUES POWER STATE ECONOMIES
Independent venues are a cornerstone of Ohio’s cultural and economic vitality — yet they remain at serious risk. According to the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), Ohio’s 312 independent venues and festivals contributed $1.5 billion to the state’s GDP in 2024, generating $3 billion in total economic output and serving over 5 million fans. These stages sustain more than 21,000 jobs and nearly $1 billion in wages and benefits, while bringing in $190 million in tourism spending and $122 million in tax revenue for state and local governments.
Despite this outsized impact, 80% of Ohio’s independent venues reported losses in 2024, making the state one of the hardest hit in the Great Lakes region. Rising costs, shrinking margins, and competition from major promoters threaten the ecosystem that fuels Ohio’s creative economy and community identity. Learn more here.
At Westside Bowl, we see this reality firsthand. While our music programming anchors Youngstown’s arts scene, it survives only because of the other arms of our business — our restaurant, bowling lanes, and community events — which help subsidize live shows. Without diversified revenue and community support, our business would not survive.
Nate, co-owner of Westside Bowl, discusses business impact in the video above.
BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH RADICAL HOSPITALITY
At Westside Bowl, we’re proud to carry that torch. We’ve built a space where touring musicians can find safety, comfort, and community on the road — a rare thing in today’s industry. Bands rest here, do laundry, take showers, and share a meal, regardless of their size or fame. The independent festivals and tours we host bring visitors who stay in local hotels and Airbnbs, strengthening Youngstown’s local economy while fostering genuine cultural exchange.
Our historic building is central to this mission, but its size and age require constant upkeep. Grant funding would directly support necessary improvements, allowing us to continue providing safe lodging, quality production spaces, and accessible opportunities for artists, while creating more local jobs and expanding our community programming.
Westside Bowl isn’t just a venue — it’s a creative hub. Local and regional artists fill our walls with paintings, murals, and prints, and our stages are regularly used to raise funds for food banks, diversity initiatives, animal rescues, and neighbors facing medical or family crises.
Supporting Westside Bowl means investing in art that sustains communities — and in a space that gives back every single day.
