Blake Cateris

Acoustic punk-folk singer Blake Cateris is here to drop a little sunshine into your day with his not-so-new but new-on-streaming services crowd favourite song ‘Oh Rocky’, an adorable and hilarious love letter to his cat.
Fresh off his 37-date UK and European tour, which saw many international fans demand he “play the cat song” in all sorts of different languages, Cateris has now released the banger on streaming services. Some say it’s due to popular demand by fans, but it could also be because he feared he’d never win the love of his cat Rocky if he didn’t. And Cateris is desperately hoping Rocky will stop shitting in the shower now that he has a whole song dedicated to him.
“I literally sat there one day, guitar in hand and he was right next to me looking at me expectantly (it was dinner time) and I thought, ‘how come you don’t have a song Rocky?’ And I had a little think about him and what this little guy does on his day to day,” Cateris said. “Watching birds through the glass door (Cat TV), how he craves the wet food I give him (some decent stuff, not the cheap supermarket stuff that stinks up the litter box), how he manages to find a guitar pick or piece of paper in the dead of the night and become obsessed with it (I live in a studio apartment so you can’t escape the noise). I thought about what else he must think of or what doesn’t think of. The only thing left was to make it rhyme.”
The clever and catchy ditty poured out of Cateris in a five-minute burst of creativity and has become an unapologetic favourite in his setlist. To everyone, but Rocky that is.
“They say cats understand their name just like dogs do, the only difference is that cats don’t care when you call them,” Cateris explains when asked if Rocky even knows his level of newfound fame. “I think he recognises his name in there when I sing it but unless it’s food time, snuggle time or sniff around outside time, he doesn’t really want me to annoy him.
“Rocky used to be scared of my guitar (because it was loud) and my singing irritated him but I think he’s grown to just tolerate it.”
For Cateris, Rocky was the cat who changed him from a dog-lover to a cat-lover, and while the song is a tongue-in-cheek ode to the lil guy, Cateris believes there’s things we can all learn from cats.
“I read somewhere once that cats are very good teachers of consent; if they don’t want you to do something, they’ll let you know and it’s your responsibility to back off or pay the consequences – you mess with the paw, you get the claw,” Cateris says. “I really like this notion and believe it (through my experience with Rocky) and I think the lessons learned can crossover into relationships you have with people as well. Since having this little guy in my life, I’ve noticed I’m much more receptive to the nuances of people’s attitudes and energies in social situations.
“As I write this he’s climbed onto my chest and buried his face in my armpit for a sleep, so I guess I can’t move now.”
