Originally from Western Pa, Hugh’s musical style was shaped by classic rock, blues, and folk influences. A masterful guitarist, vocalist, and harmonica player, he performs as a solo artist and with his acclaimed duo Mulebone, alongside multi-instrumentalist John Ragusa.
Hugh’s music, which Jon Pareles of The New York Times praised as evoking “1960s rock that is steeped in the blues,” spans a repertoire that ranges from “rolling-and-tumbling slide-guitar boogies to neo-psychedelic jams to reflective, down-home hymns that recall The Band”. This versatility underscores Hugh’s ability to channel the spirit of American music traditions while staying innovative.
In the studio, Hugh is celebrated for his engineering skills, particularly at Excello Recording in Brooklyn, a hub for indie, rock, and blues artists. His production style has been lauded by Mix Magazine for capturing “the essence of live sound in the studio, translating raw energy into recordings with an analog depth that feels palpably real.” Through both his performances and his studio work, Hugh Pool continues to bridge the timeless sounds of Americana with fresh, authentic energy.
